EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCES (EMA)

 An EMA is a weekly payment worth up to £30 for pupils who are planning to stay on at school after their leaving age.  They must complete a learning agreement at school for a minimum of 21 learning hours per week.

If you were born between 1 March 2003 and 28 February 2007 you may be eligible for an EMA. 

Autumn Intake: If your date of birth falls between 1 March 2003 and the 30 September 2006 you may be eligible for an EMA from the start of the academic year 2022/23, 15 August 2022. 

Winter Intake: If your date of birth falls between 1 October 2006 and the 28 February 2007 you may be eligible for an EMA from the start of the January term 2022/23, 09 January 2023. 

For those eligible for a full year award, if the application is not submitted by 30 September 2022, the award can only be made from the week it is received by the EMA unit. 

For those who are eligible from January 2023, if the application is not submitted by 28 February 2023, the award can only be made from the week it is received by the EMA unit. 

The cut-off date for processing application forms and submissions of documented evidence for academic year 2022/23 is 31 March 2023. No applications will be processed after this date. 

Household income is assessed on gross taxable household income for the period April 2021 to March 2022.
