In P7 and moving to Millburn in August? Password: millburn

S3 boys John MacKenzie and Calum Sampson worked hard over a period of weeks to script and film this video in conjunction with Mike Webster of Eden Court Creative.  Their aim was to create a short film which would be useful to P7 pupils and their families as they prepare to move to S1 at Millburn.

We hope it gives you a feel for some of what lies ahead.

Millburn Academy YPI Charities Fayre – community involvement sought

For a number of years Millburn Academy has taken part in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), an international initiative which helps young people to develop a greater understanding of their community.  The YPI programme explores the work of local charities and the nature of philanthropy.  This year S3 English classes will be involved in the programme at the start of the 2017/18 session, effectively for part of June until early September.

The YPI programme will be delivered during English lessons where the emphasis will be on developing skills in communication, team working, research, analysis and presentation, key skills within the English curriculum.  A team from each English class will go forward to the Final which will be held in school in September with the team judged to have made the most compelling presentation being given a £3000 YPI grant which they will present to their chosen charity.

We are inviting charities into school to take part in a Charities Fayre from 12.30 – 15.30 on Mon 21st August 2017 in order to raise awareness of the charities and the valuable work that they carry out in the community.  Pupils will have the opportunity to meet with charity representatives and to make informed choices when making the decision which charity to research further.

If you are involved with a charity it may be that the charity would like send a representative to the Charities Fayre.  For further details please contact Miss Sinclair, Depute Rector on 01463 729152 or by email: kerry.sinclair@highland.gov.uk by Fri 16 June 2017.

Fantastic fundraising efforts in support of Children in Need 2016

This year, the school’s generosity towards Children in Need reached a new high with the sum of £2781.30 being raised on Friday 18 November.  Coordinated by the prefect team fundraising included a horrible food tasting challenge for staff, a dress down day, a bake sale, face painting, beat the goalie and a whole lot more besides.

Great efforts from all involved with particular thanks to Shona, from the canteen, who bravely allowed her head to be shaved and to the prefect team who went the extra mile to set up a fantastic day throughout the school.

Today, Ben and Emma from the senior prefect team were delighted to be responsible for banking Millburn’s contribution.

P7 Transition Event at Millburn

200 pupils from local primary schools spent the morning at Millburn Academy today taking part in a transition event led by pupils.  With the twin aims of helping P7s to get to know one another and to get to know more about life at Millburn senior pupils had devised a programme which included:

  • tours of the school with tour guides being S1 pupils
  • a dance workshop led by Highlife Highland dance artist Amy Gallacher, supported by S2 pupils Lucy Munro and Chloe-Louise Mackenzie and S3 pupil Charley Forbes
  • a session on expectations and aspirations led by senior pupils

P7 pupils took part enthusiastically with Millburn pupils commenting on how enjoyable it had been taking responsibility for the event.

The next stage of the transition process takes place in June when P7 pupils attend Millburn Academy for three days following, for the greater part of the time, their S1 timetable.  S1 classes are in the process of being created, informed by information received from primary colleagues.

Ceilidh for pupils joining Millburn Academy in August 2016

One of the first major transition events involving pupils who will begin S1 at Millburn Academy in August 2016 takes place on Friday 18th December.  Approximately 200 pupils from our associated primary schools will come to Millburn where staff and pupils will host a ceilidh of social dancing.  Always a popular event on the transition calendar it’s a great opportunity for pupils moving to Millburn to start to get to know one another and to meet some of the teachers they will work with at Millburn as well as some of the older pupils.

The ceilidh, which takes place from 1000 until 1200, takes place in the hall which will be decorated for other Christmas dances and assemblies.  We look forward to meeting the P7 pupils on this date.

News w/b 16 November

S6 pupil Fergus Robb writes:

Glasgow School of Art at Millburn Academy
On 4 November schools from across Highland received an interactive talk from a member of staff and a student from the Glasgow School of Art.
Teachers, pupils and their parents attended and were given a valuable insight into the application process for art schools. Interactive exercises helped people to think about how they personally could achieve the standards expected. One to one discussion was useful as it personalised the experience and specific questions could then be answered. The evening was extremely useful.

ASN Coffee Morning
The ASN department had a small Macmillan Coffee Morning last week on Wednesday 4 November. This raised £43.71 for Macmillan Cancer. The department baked all the biscuits and cakes for the event.

Children In Need Dress Down Day
On Friday 13 November, Millburn pupils and teachers dressed up as Disney characters to support Children In Need. Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar, a Disney quiz and a teacher karaoke show contributed to the funds, as well as the Rector and teachers dressing up as ‘Cruella de Vil’ and her Dalmatians. Prefects organised the day and the school community was successful in raising almost £2000 for Children in Need.

Sports
Millburn Senior BoysfFootball team beat Ullapool 6-0. The team will be travelling to Ullapool to compete in a second leg.

Congratulations to Calum Maclean, Struan McCulloch and Gabriel Hastings who represented North of Scotland Football team at different levels.

Masterchef
On Tuesday 10 November, Megan Keith and Ruhi Mahomoodally took part in the final round of a Local Masterchef Competition sponsored by ASDA and the Williamson Group Ltd and organised by the Rotary Club of Inverness Culloden. Meghan, the winner of the competition, will be going on to another competition in Aberdeen. The competition was judged by Masterchef 2014 Finalist, Brian MacLeish. The chefs said that the food cooked in the competition was of a standard which would be served in their restaurants.
