Millburn Academy is a six year secondary school serving the area of Inverness east of the River Ness and the rural areas to the south of the city. This catchment area includes Crown,Daviot, Drakies. Inshes, Raigmore and Strathdearn Schools, our associated primary schools. Pupils who attend the denominational schools – St Joseph’s and Bishop Eden – will also come to us for their secondary schooling, if they live within our catchment zone.

The Rector of the School is Delia Thornton. The school motto is ‘Strive to Achieve’. The school roll at present is around 1080 pupils and there are 115 members of staff.

The school first opened in 1961 as Millburn Junior Secondary School. In 1976 the school name was changed to Millburn Academy (as opposed to Millburn High School) after School Council pressure on the Education Committee. From 1979 onwards the school began to focus on becoming a six year school and to this day it is held in high regard by parents and the community at large for the very good standard of education it offers. The school runs parallel to the ‘Mill Burn’ which was originally used for a whisky distillery. The distillery is now gone and has been replaced by a chain hotel.

In January 2007 construction work began on the building of the new Millburn Academy, which opened on November 3rd 2008.  The new Millburn Academy was built on the old school’s playing fields.  The ground which the old school previously occupied will become the new playing fields.

The £26 million state of the art building has a range of classrooms with specialist facilities, an integral base for children with additional support needs, a four court games hall, a gymnasium, dance studio, a library and a performance venue with bleacher seating.
