Intermediate 2 Psychology

Pupils will complete the following units which are 40 hours each:

Unit 1 – Psychology: Understanding the Individual

Three topics are studied in this unit with the focus on individual processes.

  • Development of the self-concept
  • Cognition and learning
  • Motivation

Unit 2 – Investigating Behaviour

Research methods in Psychology are addressed in this unit.  Psychological research skills are developed by means of planning and carrying out class-room based research tasks (one survey and one experiment) and reporting on these in a Practical Portfolio.  The topics studied in this unit are:

  • The nature of the research process
  • Experimental method
  • Non-experimental methods – survey, case study
  • Data presentation
  • Ethical issues in research

Unit 3 – The Individual in the Social Context

Three topics are studied in this unit with the focus on social interaction.

  • Personality
  • Non-verbal communication
  • Pro-social behavior

S6 Higher Psychology

Pupils complete the following units which are forty hours each

Unit 1 – Psychology: Understanding the Individual

Three topics are studied in this unit with the focus on individual processes.

  • Early socialisation
  • Memory
  • Stress

Unit 2 – Investigating Behaviour

The nature of the research process is studied, several specific types of psychological research methodology and data analysis are considered, and ethical issues in research are examined.  Psychological research skills are developed by means of planning, implementing and reporting a Research Investigation.

Unit 3 – The Individual in the Social Context

Three topics are studied in this unit with the focus on physiological processes in the context of social interaction.

  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Conformity and obedience
  • Atypical behaviour – therapies; intelligence
