Spanish is offered from S3 and can be taken on its own or with French or Gaelic. There is no requirement of prior knowledge for pupils to be allowed to choose Spanish, indeed the language skills developed in French or Gaelic in S1 and S2 should assist them with their learning of the language.
Pupils can opt to continue with Spanish into S4 to National 4 or National 5 level.
In S5 and S6, pupils can opt to study Spanish at National level or can “crash” a Higher – this tends to happen in S6.
Those who have achieved the required grades at Higher in S5 can then continue to Advanced Higher level in S6.
